Welcome to Silvrback, the new home of the YJ tech blog.
Being a geeky bunch, having a blog on Tumblr or Wordpress was never really going to cut it for the YJ tech blog. My original requirements were very simple:
- Write in Markdown
- Store in git.
I didn't really want the hassle of picking a theme, or worse than that, having to edit or create one. A static site generator was the obvious answer, with Jekyll and Github pages being the standout candidate. Unfortunately, we're not a Ruby company, and even though I could get it up and running locally, it was a PITA, and not something I wanted to have to deal with.
The best writing experience on the web at the moment is Medium, but it has a couple of flaws for a company blog: first, little control over the content, which is written in their editor, but not in markdown; second, there's a lot of noise, and it's not really a blogging platform, it's a polemic platform, suitable for individuals with strong opinions (including myself ).
What I really wanted was something that combined the style and simplicity of Medium, but allowed me to copy and past Markdown into its editor. And that's what Silvrback offers.
It was introduced to me via HN - https://www.silvrback.com/dsowers/introducing-silvrback, and it has the rare distinction of something that actually delivers on the promise.
Well done to Damian, we're happy to come along for the ride,
